Une semaine après le début de l'intervention internationale contre les forces pro-Kadhafi, la ville d'Ajdabiya est tombée aux mains des insurgés. Première victoire rendue possible par la destruction des chars et autres véhicules des forces de Kadhafi par les raids aériens de la coalition, dont l'armée de l'air française. Pas une famille de cette ville qui n'ait pas à regretter un ou plusieurs morts du fait des forces pro-gouvernementales. D'abord un peu surpris par leur victoire, les insurgés envisagent maintenant d'avancer sur Brega. Ils ont cette fois récupéré beaucoup de matériels abandonnés lors de la fuite précipitée des forces de Kadhafi. Le moral a changé de camp.
